Public Archeology Dig

On Saturday March 4, Archeologists led by Professor Richard Veit of Monmouth University came to the Somers Mansion to begin the process of evaluating the site for a dig coordinated by the Patriots for the Somers Mansion and historian Dr. Levi Fox, paid for with a New Jersey Council for the Humanities Grant. After digging numerous test pits at 25 or 50 foot intervals depending on the location, the team located a couple of hopeful spots for further excavations on the immediate south and west sides of the Mansion. On Saturday May 6 at 10 AM the team will return for another day of digs, and on that day members of the public are invited to participate in the dig as part of a Public Archeology Day that we hope you can attend!
