SUMMARY:5th Annual Art in the Park
DESCRIPTION:The Somers Point Arts Commission presents the 5th annual Art in the Park at John F. Kennedy Park. Art in the Park features the work of a number of local and regional\, professional and amateur artists for exhibit and sale; and a “plein aire” painting competition by artists painting on location. Prizes will be awarded to both professional and amateur artists; attendees to the event will vote for the People’s Choice Award. Additional fun-filled attractions will include interactive art experiences for adults and children\, entertainment by the Tom Angello Jazz Trio and by local favorite singer/guitarist Marc Wasserman. There will be a children’s clothesline art exhibit featuring the work of Somers Point Students in the after-school C.A.S.T.L.E program. Interactive art activities for children include Cardboard Construction\, Collage Corner\, Design & Paint Your Own Backpack\, Yoga and Face painting. Food vendors include Jay’s Crab Shack\, Upper Sandwiches\, Maui Joe’s Shaved Ice\, and Mr. Ice Cream Man. The event is free and open to the public. Kennedy Park provides handicapped parking and additional assistance will be provided by request two weeks prior to the event by emailing somersptarts@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:“Writing Poetry Your Way” is a six-week poetry writing session held on Tuesdays from February 25 through March 31 at Somers Point’s Dawes Avenue School Library\, 22 West Dawes Avenue from 6-7:30 p.m. Presented by Maria Leonetti\, Somers Point’s former poet laureate\, “Writing Poetry Your Way” is open to practicing or beginning poets. Participants have opportunities to learn various forms of poetry and to write and read their poetry at each session in an open sharing forum. \nThere is no charge for participating in “Writing Poetry Your Way”. DESCRIPTION:Love the Arts in Somers Point takes place on Sunday\, February 23 at Greate Bay Country Club 901 Mays Landing Road in Somers Point from 2-4 p.m. The program begins promptly at 2 p.m.; doors open at 1:45 p.m. \nLove the Arts in Somers Point will include visual presentation of the Arts Commission’s 2019 programs and activities; as well as introduce the Somers Point community to its 2020 programs\, projects and events that will take place in the Somers Point Public Schools\, the Senior/Community Center\, Kennedy Park\, Greate Bay Country Club\, Shore Medical Center and other locations throughout the city. \nA highlight of Love the Arts in Somers Point event will be the exhibit of The Arts Reach Out 2019 and the recognition of the children\, their families and seniors who experienced art activities in the Somers Point Schools After-School (CASTLE) program and at the Somers Point Senior Center. \nA special part of the afternoon will be the introduction of Somers Point’s newly appointed Poet Laureate\, Erin Castaldi who will meet and greet attendees and present readings from her original Haiku poems. Erin will share her background and her plans for bringing poetry to the community. The public will also be introduced to the winner of the city’s 8th grade Junior Poet Competition. \nAlso featured will be jazz entertainment in partnership with the South Jersey Jazz Society\, art activities for children\, balloon sculptures by The Balloon Lady\, a silent auction and a light buffet for both adults & children. The Commission will also recognize contributors to the 2019 programs as well as members of non-profit arts organizations including the Community Education Recreation Office (CER) through the Somers Point Schools\, the South Jersey Jazz Society and World Above Poetry who are critical to the success of the Arts Commission’s 2020 programs. \nThere is no charge for the Love the Arts event; however\, donations are gratefully accepted. SUMMARY:“Perspectives of African Pianism” Presented by the Somers Point Arts Commission
DESCRIPTION:The Somers Point Arts Commission presents a lecture and concert titled Perspectives on African Pianism: The Piano Music of Nigerian & Ghanaian Composers for Piano\, given by pianist and poet Echezonachukwu Nduka on Tuesday\, November 12 at Gateway Playhouse\, Bay Avenue in Somers Point. \n  \nThe program\, beginning at 7 p.m.\, will offer the audience a rare opportunity to learn about the little known classical music of Africa with a visual accompaniment. A brief intermission will be followed by Mr. Nduka’s performance and an opportunity for post-concert dialogue. Gateway Playhouse is a handicapped accessible venue; for additional special requirements call 609-653-4991 two weeks prior to the event. Students are especially invited to attend this event. There is no charge for this event; however\, suggested $20 and $10 for student donation to the Commission is much appreciated. \n  \nMr. Nduka holds academic degrees in music from the University of Nigeria\, Nsukka and Kingston University London\, UK. A widely featured pianist and author\, he specializes in piano music by Nigerian composers and composers of African origin. His recordings have aired on BBC\, Radio Nacional Clasica de Argentina\, Classical Journey Ep. 134\, among others. Mr. Nduka is currently Organist & Director of Music at Anglican Church of Transformation\, Mays Landing. SUMMARY:4th Annual Art in the Park Event
DESCRIPTION:The Somers Point Arts Commission presents the 4th annual Art in the Park at John F. Kennedy Park. Art in the Park features the work of a number of local and regional\, professional and amateur artists for exhibit and sale; and a “plein aire” painting competition by artists painting on location. Prizes will be awarded to both professional and amateur artists; attendees to the event will vote for the People’s Choice Award. Additional fun-filled attractions will include interactive art experiences for adults and children\, entertainment by the Tom Angello Jazz Trio and by local favorite singer/guitarist Marc Wasserman. There will be a children’s clothesline art exhibit featuring the work of Somers Point Students in the after-school C.A.S.T.L.E program. Interactive art activities for children include Cardboard Construction\, Collage Corner\, Design & Paint Your Own Backpack\, Yoga and Face painting. Food vendors include Jay’s Crab Shack\, Upper Sandwiches\, Maui Joe’s Shaved Ice\, and Mr. Ice Cream Man. The event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:April in Paris kicks off with April in Paris: An Evening of Spoken Words & Music – hosted by the Somers Point Arts Commission at Greate Bay Country Club in the Bay Room (Le Café de la Baie) from 7-8:30 p.m. This event opens Somers Point’s 4th Annual April in Paris\, a week-long\, multi-disciplinary celebration of all things French. The program will present French themed poetry readings by regional poets\, representing South Jersey Poets Collective\, Beach Bards\, A Tour of Poetry and Jersey Cape Writers. The featured poet for 2019 is Echezonachukwu Nduka\, a Nigerian-born poet\, classical pianist and musicologist who holds degrees in music from the University of Nigeria and Kingston University in London\, UK. This event will also feature accordion solos of French tunes by Tony De Luca. Adding to the décor is a mini art exhibit from the show currently on display at Greate Bay Gallery from April 3-20\, Images by Trois Artistes (Three Artists): Michele Collins\, Chuck Law\, and Kathleen Arleth.
