SUMMARY:Christmas Tree Decorating and Lighting
DESCRIPTION:Somers Point-Community First\, a local volunteer organization\, announced that it will once again host a Christmas tree decorating and lighting event this holiday season. All clubs\, restaurants\, families\, and organizations within the Somers Point community are invited to come decorate a tree. Trees are located along Bay Avenue in front of Shore Medical Center. A sign will be placed outside of the accompanying tree to identify participation. The decorating of the trees will begin on Saturday\, December 4. Each establishment will be responsible for decorating and removing the decorations off their own trees. \nThe lighting event will take place on Wednesday\, December 8 from 4pm-5pm. Hot cocoa and candy canes will be available for attendees. Santa will arrive on a fire truck from the Somers Point Fire Department to greet everyone\, and lead the ceremonial illumination of the park. \n25 trees are available. DESCRIPTION:The Riddlesbrood Players will present an original\, and a bit quirky\, take on Charles Dickens’\, “A Christmas Carol”. Treat yourself and your family to this fun\, outdoor opportunity to celebrate the holidays with this classic holiday tale.  There will be holiday music\, sparkling sets\, and special effects tied together by a high-spirited cast dressed in lavish costumes\, to bring this tale of 19th century London to life. And to add to the merriment they’ve added a dollop of humor sure to tickle a smile from the crotchety old Scrooge himself.\n     The performance will be staged as separate acts on various porches in the Bayfront Historic District. Act One will take place at 37 Somers Ave. in Somers Point\, and then we will continue to three other\, close-by porches in the Historic District for the other acts. The evening will culminate outside at Gregory’s Restaurant\, 900 Shore Road\, Somers Point\, where light holiday refreshments will be served.

Somers Point Community Day takes place on Saturday\, September 18 from 10am to 12 Noon along Bay Avenue across from Harbor Cove. No (dog) bones about it\, it’s going to be a great event!\nCommunity’s Day will open with the “Show Us Your Paws” parade\, led by R Dog of Republic Bank. This parade is open to all dogs in attendance. At the conclusion of the parade\, the Beauty and the Leash pageant will begin. Contestants can be entered to compete in one of two categories: “Talent” or “Costume/Look Like Owner.” The winner in each category will be awarded a gift certificate to The Grilled Cheese and Crabcake Company\, a casual eatery located at 55 West Laurel Drive in Somers Point.\nThroughout the event\, attendees interact with local businesses\, who are invited to connect with community members by handing out coupons\, menus\, samples\, and even discuss potential job opportunities. Representatives from Sturdy Bank will make balloon animals for children in attendance.\n“This event brings all of the great things about living and working in Somers Point together\,” said Mike Smith\, the Vice President of Somers Point Business Association and a founding member of Somers Point-Community First. “The turnout for the pageant in 2019 was unbelievable\, and we expect another great response. We’re excited to expand the scope of our Beauty and the Leash pageant from previous years to give a chance for local businesses to promote themselves and personally connect with those who live in our community.”\nThere is no RSVP required to enter the pageant. Businesses interested in attending should contact Mike Smith at michael.smith@shoremedicalcenter.org by Sept 16. There is no fee to participate.\nIn addition to the contests\, the volunteer dogs of Shore’s pet therapy program will be honored. This event will also raise awareness for local dogs that are in need of adoption.

SUMMARY:Somers Point Good Old Days Festival 2021
DESCRIPTION:A festival featuring a variety of music (2 stages)\, antique cars\, children’s activities\, community group participation\, and hot dogs\, hamburgers\, and sodas.\nThe proceeds from the “Good Old Days” festival benefit the Lawrence “Bud” Kern Memorial Trust Fund.\nThis fund was established in 1979 to recognize graduating high school students from Somers Point who have demonstrated community spirit and pride and through their involvement in civic and scholastic activities have displayed a singular dedication to purpose.\nRecipients are chosen annually and receive scholarships ranging from $1\,000 to $3\,000. The memorial fund honors Lawrence “Bud” Kern\, former Recreation Commission Chairperson and Little League President. Bud was instrumental in the development of recreation facilities and programs within Somers Point. He expanded countless volunteer hours in service to his community. It was his idea to have an end-of-summer community picnic\, which gave rise to this event.\nThrough supporting and recognizing high school students who reflect the qualities that made Bud Kern such a special individual\, we hope in some small way to perpetuate his spirit.
