SUMMARY:Annual Richard Somers Day
DESCRIPTION:The City of Somers Point and the Somers Point Historical Society will sponsor the annual Richard Somers Day on Sunday\, September 8 at 2 p.m.\, at the Richard Somers Memorial Park\, 801 Shore Road. Each year a memorial remembrance is held for local historic native Richard Somers and the crew from the Intrepid. \nIn case of rain\, the memorial will be held in the Council Chambers of the Somers Point City Hall. \nRichard Somers\, born and raised in Somers Point\, NJ\, was a Captain in the US Navy. While in command of the US Navy ship\, the Nautilus\, Richard Somers was fighting against the Barbary Pirates in the Mediterranean. Under the command of Edward Preble\, Captain Somers conceived a courageous plan. His plan was to fit up the ketch\, Intrepid\, as a fire ship and sail her into Tripoli Harbor and explode her amongst the enemy ships. The Intrepid was fitted with 1500 pounds of gunpowder\, a quantity of shells\, shot\, broken iron\, and combustibles. Knowing this mission could mean death\, all men volunteered under Captain Somers. One the eve of September 3\, 1804\, the Intrepid\, entered Tripoli Harbor. A sudden explosion was seen by Preble’s fleet outside the harbor. The Intrepid took fire sooner than intended\, taking the lives of Captain Somers and all 12 of his crew members.

SUMMARY:Hear the Remarkable Story of Richard Somers
DESCRIPTION:For more than 500 years\, fanatic Muslim sea fighters of the Turkish Empire in North Africa attacked Christian ships and coastal towns as far away as Ireland. Millions of Europeans were captured and sold as slaves. Rich countries like England\, France\, and Holland paid bribes to get some of their people back. \nAmerica also paid those bribes. But in 1798\, we had enough. We built a new navy to protect our people. Richard Somers of Somers Point was one of the first to join. In 1801\, President Thomas Jefferson sent them overseas. Somers commanded one of those ships at age 23. \nThose young Americans amazed and inspired the world with their skills and courage. They ended Islamic attacks on the West for almost 200 years. Their liberation of European slaves in North Africa intensified efforts to free African-American slaves in this country. \nRichard Somers was killed during a daring mission in Tripoli on September 4\, 1804. \nLiberty and Prosperity will host a fundraising cash bar buffet on Sunday\, September 8 after the Richard Somers Day Ceremony at Gregory’s Restaurant until 7 p.m. \nTickets are $35 each\, or 2 for $60. \nLearn more at libertyandprosperity.com\, email info@libertyandprosperity.com\, or call 609-927-7333.
