DESCRIPTION:Crabbers grab your traps – the ninth annual Assault on Patcong Creek returns on Friday\, June 22 and Saturday\, June 23. With bushel baskets and crabbing traps in hand\, participating teams launch their vessels into the water in search of rich crab habitats. This tournament\, which began in 2010\, has grown to be the largest crabbing tournament in the United States. Following the tournament on Saturday\, there will be an invite only barbecue and crab bake for all participating crabbers and their families\, featuring: crab races\, a magician\, live music\, a crab cake eating contest\, environmental and educational groups\, and much more. DESCRIPTION:The Somers Point Arts Commission presents the 4th annual Art in the Park at John F. Kennedy Park. Art in the Park features the work of a number of local and regional\, professional and amateur artists for exhibit and sale; and a “plein aire” painting competition by artists painting on location. Prizes will be awarded to both professional and amateur artists; attendees to the event will vote for the People’s Choice Award. Additional fun-filled attractions will include interactive art experiences for adults and children\, entertainment by the Tom Angello Jazz Trio and by local favorite singer/guitarist Marc Wasserman. There will be a children’s clothesline art exhibit featuring the work of Somers Point Students in the after-school C.A.S.T.L.E program. Interactive art activities for children include Cardboard Construction\, Collage Corner\, Design & Paint Your Own Backpack\, Yoga and Face painting. Food vendors include Jay’s Crab Shack\, Upper Sandwiches\, Maui Joe’s Shaved Ice\, and Mr. Ice Cream Man. The event is free and open to the public. Dining and other tours are at your own cost. Sign-ups will begin March 1\, when the website is loaded with all trip details. Payment and sign-ups can be completed online or via mail and seating will be based on the order of payment. This is a bus trip that is rarely offered anymore and the tour of the Naval Academy is special. A $5 discount per member will be given to existing members of the Historical Society. DESCRIPTION:April in Paris kicks off with April in Paris: An Evening of Spoken Words & Music – hosted by the Somers Point Arts Commission at Greate Bay Country Club in the Bay Room (Le Café de la Baie) from 7-8:30 p.m. This event opens Somers Point’s 4th Annual April in Paris\, a week-long\, multi-disciplinary celebration of all things French. The program will present French themed poetry readings by regional poets\, representing South Jersey Poets Collective\, Beach Bards\, A Tour of Poetry and Jersey Cape Writers. The featured poet for 2019 is Echezonachukwu Nduka\, a Nigerian-born poet\, classical pianist and musicologist who holds degrees in music from the University of Nigeria and Kingston University in London\, UK. This event will also feature accordion solos of French tunes by Tony De Luca. Adding to the décor is a mini art exhibit from the show currently on display at Greate Bay Gallery from April 3-20\, Images by Trois Artistes (Three Artists): Michele Collins\, Chuck Law\, and Kathleen Arleth. A dessert buffet will be available from 6:15-7 p.m. \nThere is no charge for this event; donations to the Arts Commission are gratefully accepted. Reservations are highly recommended. The event will take place at DiOrio’s Circle Café on MacArthur Boulevard in Somers Point from 4-7 p.m. The menu will include caesar salad\, appetizer meatballs\, wings and tenders\, pasta with broccoli with white wine sauce\, wine\, domestic beer\, and sodas. \nThe cost is $25 per person for adults and $10 for children. There will also be Chinese auction baskets\, and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are available for purchase in advance by calling the Somers Point Historical Society at 609-927-2900. The Somers Point Historical Museum\, located at 745 Shore Road\, will be open on March 9 from 5-7 p.m. to purchase tickets directly.
